North by LinuxFest Northwest – Corvallis

fedora10-released-bannerA nearly flawless road trip accented the day yesterday, and around 13 hours after departing from Santa Cruz, we arrived in Corvallis to start this odyssey. Today Karsten and I get to talk to students at Oregon State, check out the OSWALD (Oregon State Wireless Activity Learning Device), visit the Open Source Lab and address the LUG in the evening. So it’s a long day ahead.

On the road, I had a chance to digest the MySQL conference, which I attended on Tuedsay both as an attendee as well as staffing the dbEntrance booth. In a nutshell, it seemed on Tuesday that the show was sparsely populated, attendee wise, as well as missing some of the bigger companies (like Red Hat). It’s hard to gauge whether this was due more to the fact that the economy tanking or whether the Oracle deal turned a number of people away.

In my opinion — and you knew that was coming — it’s a toss-up, but I’d blame the economy moreso than the Oracle deal. In most cases, folks I talked to were going to be there anyway, Oracle or not, so I think I’m going with the former. But I could be wrong.

Reporting back later . . . .
